Since I am running short of vacation time this year, and the weather hasn't been overly cooperative in the past, I didn't take the opener off. I did get home early enough to try some local spots with my youngest boy. Spent about 2.5 hrs hunting and had 2 unproductive points, and Ryan managed to bag 1 frog, 2 toads, and numerous grasshoppers. I made him practice catch & release, but this morning I found a nice big green grasshopper sitting on my dash when I left for work so he managed to sneak at least one in.

Will be heading to the UP for some better hunting (I hope) with a few of the club members in a week and a half.

Sounds like a nice hunt, Todd. The kids will fondly remember those outings their whole life.

Getting out for small game opener is a tradition for us so my boys (age 6 and 4) and I went down the road to a 90 acre piece owned by a good friend last night. Ended up with 2 squirrels, one missed missed rabbit, deer sightings, and about 100 frogs. The boys sure had big smiles on faces when they layed down for bed last night!

Good luck with the grouse, nothing more enjoyable than a romp in the North Woods for the King of gamebirds!

I missed the opener this year. A friend of mine John went out with his dog and put up 3 grouse and 4 woodcock in 3.5 hours of hunting. He was hunting in Tuscola State Game Area witch happens to be about 5 minutes north of my house. He had to battle the water from all the rain we got over the weekend but I guess it was worth it.

I'm going to the same area this weekend and try it out. If we don't do any good this weekend I'm going to head up north some where the following weekend and try my luck.
