Does anyone have or know anyone who has a O/U Bazikal or Spartan? I was considering getting a less expensive 20 gauge O/U for small game. I was thinking of this gun (see link below) being a Spartan and having a preference for Remington (eventhough this is a not directly made by Remington). If it is cheaper than most O/U because it is a work horse and not a show horse that is fine in my opinion of a field gun. I like to keep it simple and already have a Remington 870 that I use for deer and turkey. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks, ATB www.spartangunworks.com/spr310_nickel.htm

I've seen the Spartan, held it, didn't like it much. Never shot it. I know a few Baikal owners. Big, bulky, but useable/reliable. Personally, I don't like them, too darn heavy.
You might want to look into a good used gun. I use an old Zoli 12ga. Picked it up for $400 6 yrs ago, and it has been very good for me. I had Briley put in choke tubes and paid more for that than the gun, but it is a real sweet shooter.

I curently shoot a Baikal (Russian) O/U with 26" tubes. I love this gun it handles real nice, sholders, points real good. I use this gun for every thing but deer. It has a 3" chamber so you can use it for waterfowl and turkeys. This gun can be picked up for about $300.00. I put a fiber optic sight on it. It comes with 3 choke tubes (F,M,IC). I have even shot slugs out of it with some good paterns (I use a 11-87 for deer&turkeys mostly).
I would like to look at the spartan as I hear they have a model with both the 20 & 12ga. barrels for the same reciver. I like that idea as I do alot of Bird hunting and the 12 is a bit much for quail.
If I was to buy a new gun with only 1 gauge avabile I would go with a 20 O/U, As its big enough for pheasant but small enough for quail. And I feel I can shot geese and ducks with it, I also wouldn't be apoused to using it for turkeys. The O.U's are lighter then the pumps, auto loaders. I've also found even with a 3rd shot I usaly don't hit any thing with it any how. |
