Well, since Saturday was such a crappy day to go fishing, and my invite to fish Lake Erie on a friend's boat was postponed, what better thing to do than to drive 200 miles and pick up a new dog.

I've been debating getting a new pup for some time. My Brittany is 13 and stone deaf. He still hunts, but he gets slower every day. My setter turned 9 on Saturday, and while he does and excellent job, he is nearly old enough to qualify for the AARP.

In the past year, I've had 3 calls of folks with young dogs needing a good home. I've been passing them up, but something about the 1 1/2 yr old Brittany caught my interest. Friday night I talked to the owner and decided to take a look. Saturday the family drove over to South Haven where we found him at the home of a young pastor and his wife (Divine intervention, maybe). We spent some time with him, and then went to lunch to discuss the decision. 2 hrs later we were headed back to pick him up and take him home.

He's very intelligent. 2 days, and he has stopped jumping up on people and jumping on the furniture, unless the kids get him really wound up. I ran him for a couple hours yesterday on our Hillsdale leases, and he responded very well. I was even able to let him run dragging the check cord.

He's still a big gamble. The folks who had him are not hunters, and his breeder is a show dog person. Based on my short time with him, though, I think he'll do alright. He's proven he has a nose, he just needs some guidance on how to use it. It's going to be a busy spring and summer.

Good Luck with that. You should do well. Over here the pups are 4 weeks old on saturday and starting to become very busy little animals. Dad and I are arguing over which female to keep and which to sell. got 2 females and 4 males. 1 male is already sold to this person I know who loves runts. Don't know why but they says they make the best dogs

We take our eye off you for a minute and look what happens. Congrats on the new pup. Since you are into multiple dogs, can I drop mine off when I go on vacation? She is not shy, very fast and cab leap 8 couchs in a single bound.

Mine is at training school for a month. Started to see I needed more time and expertise to get the job done. The trainer is up in the thumb. Great place and appears to be a good guy. He has a very nice facility. He has about 8 Brits, a few GSPs and a beagle of his own. While we were there and touring the facility all his dogs were in their runs greeting us nicely, the owner said to all his dogs to kennel and all of them quietly scampered into their individual little houses, kind of like the beer commercial where the boss is walking into a bar and all the subordinates ditch just before he walks in. It was cool. Then he calls them and they all come out in unisin to greet us. No force training. I look forward to going up there in a few weeks to work with the dog and trainer. He has ponds and lotas of natural habitat, just bought 100 quail for the training.

Congrats Todd, I still think you would have been better off with a GSP though. Had I known you where in the market I think I could have even found you one or two. I hope this brit works out for you, I can't believe Ted is that old Cooper either for that mater. I can see you wont be doing as much fishing this year as you did last year, you might as well give me your boat as you wont be needing it ha ha haa.

Greg, Who is the trainer you took your pup to? I'm just wondering if I might know them? It sounds like your going to have fun 100 quail is a lot of birds for a weekend shoot, makes for some nice dog training. Your dog is still just a pup correct, about 6 months old or so? Any how good luck with the training and remember if your happy with what your dog does that is all that matters, don't let anyone tell you your dog should do this or that your the one that has to be happy with your dog.

Greg,
If I added another dog, the wife would leave me. Even though I gave her full veto rights and she agreed to the dog, she's been giving me the evil eye for the past couple of days as it is. He'll definitely give your pup a run for her money in the energy department.

Frank,
I'll never own a short-haired dog. Just isn't in my blood. I was really kinda set on another setter, but the pup changed all that. I'll be busy, but I'll still be fishing. Boat came home yesterday. Plan to rig it up and defog it tonight. Should be on the river for the maiden voyage Wednesday night.

Congrats on the new pup! Good luck with the training! It seems like I spend a lot time with JD and I don't seem to get as far as I'd like, but he's our boy and we're happy with him.
