Here is the deal. We have the habitat and water source. 20 adult quail from Farmland pheasant hunters inc for release will cost $160. Rex, the $3.75 rate is only for members of S.E. Michigan Bird Dog Club in pkg. of 30 birds. The release alone might work, however, to get the birds through food shortages and keep them on the property feeding stations make a big difference. Maby someone could make one. The best way is a comercial feeder so the mice, ect. do not get to the expensive grain inside. The one I am looking at is $259 plus $100 shipping. Feeds quail and pheasants. I would build a barrier to keep out the turkeys. They dominate the food chain here making it hard for a pheasant to find a meal. Wheat and sorghum are best for the quail. problem is I can not find any at any price right now. We can get buy now with quality songbird mix $15.99 a bag. I should be able to get wheat from a local farmer this fall. Well I love seeing quail but being retired I do not have the extra money. If members can pay I will obtain everything and fill the feeder. Let me know what everyone thinks. I would like to release the birds in roughly one month.
Dan, $8 a bird is way too much money for 1 bird. I'm sure I can find them cheaper then what Farmland pheasants is asking. You say you want 20? Also I have found cracked corn works for a good feed for both quail and pheasants, if you was to throw some wheat in for something different that would probly be great.

Hi Frank, I agree $8 is a lot, perhaps a member has a better source. The key to establishing seams to be the feeder. Do you think we can raise the money? The quail experts have concerns about cracked grains (cracked corn) absorbing moisture from the air and molding. Thanks for the help. I will keep working on this until it happens. I am getting stuborn in my old age.
Here is a link to a feeder that could be made very cheap. Instead of using the post, it could be held up off the ground with a couple of small bricks to keep mice out. To keep out the turkeys, a couple of posts and some page wire in a 6-10' circle would work. Some branches on top of it would keep out the hawks.
$6 is much better. We just sold some livestock at auction and lost money so I have no money for this project. I could jury rig a feeder. Todd could you see if any money could be collected for birds and feed? If not, we will pass on this year and try again next year.
