Just an FYI for those still deer hunting. It’s a great time and perhaps the easiest time to identify and hunt the trails leading to and from feeding areas. I, like many of you, are still very much into the late season deer hunting. This is a special time for me because I love to harvest does at this time but don’t think that it can’t be a great time to fill your buck tag as well. Folks, the second rut is happening. This past week I witnessed three different bucks pestering does one of which mounted a young doe at least a half dozen times. In 28 years of deer hunting I have never seen a buck actually mount a doe and this year I’ve seen it twice. So… for those who haven’t filled their tags, don’t give up cause you never know what might stroll by. Good luck!!!
Oh yea, The first one I saw down in Ohio was a beautiful 2 1/2 year old, 120ish, 8 point. The other two were here in Michigan Monday evening. The first one at 2:30 was an 8 point (Maybe 115")and second was a 4 point. Unfortionately the 4 point was the one that I saw mounting the doe. I know some guys down in Ohio that have taken there best bucks in late January. Ya never know. You still have to lucky.
I saw 2 bucks chasing a small doe on the 15th in Hillsdale. One was a 120 or so 8pt. Last weekend, I saw 23 does on Saturday and not a single buck. Plan to be back out there tomorrow, just hope the rain stays away.
