Folks, Just thougt I'd send out a warning, I'm hearing lots of reports of bucks who have dropped their antlers already. Also, if you do shoot a buck, be careful grabbing the antlers. Hate to have that trophy of a lifetime pop off in your hands.

Hey Todd. Can you please expand on this. "Alot of reports of bucks dropping antlers". Been hunting 30 years and never heard of this in mid-December. So I'm curious where this info is coming from. What area? What does "Alot" constitute. Plus, in order to confirm this is the case at this time of year seems you would have to have downed the deer then discovered that. Anyway, you have me really curious. Thanks.

I know of three folks who have found sheds already. MISportsmen has a thread on it and a dozen or so folks have reported seeing deer with dropped antlers, all across the state. I talked with relatives in the Alpena area last night. They have been really having problems with deer in the barnyard trying to feed on the cattle silage. Have been shooting a lot of does to keep it down, and ended up seeing some bucks with no antlers. Trying to be very cautious to protect the bucks, but they are being overrun. I think this early cold weather plus the high herd densities are causing stress that is causing the early drop. I've seen small bucks drop this early, but this is the most I've heard in as long as I can remember.

I would say the bucks in Southern MI are a little behind unless they are wounded or stressed. The southern MI bucks can hold onto them until Feb/March. Most of the stories I read on MI Sportsman was north. Southern MI has had a much harder winter then normal. We are going to see antler loss sooner this year.
I have a friend who owns a ranch in the Cadillac area. One year I had my son up there hunting just before Christmas. There were two enclosures. Both were around 500 acres. One was new so the DNR required all the deer to be shot out of it. It was hunted hard, deer drives people out there all the time. The deer in this enclosure had starting dropping the third week of Dec. The other enclosure still had most of the bucks sporting the antlers. They had to use permits on any deer taken in the new enclosure. The reason I mention this was due to the fact they shot 280 deer on 500 acres. This was a open ended, fenched enclosure until the last 80 was just closed up. Tells how many deer can hold in a large area with food.
