Hmmm, it sounds like this guy has a strong desire to disrupt your trapping. He/she is also very sloppy in going about their criminal business. I wonder if you don't have an animal worshipper/PETA/"animal rights" type of fanatic on your hands here.
Hope you get a plate number and other details to hand over to the authorities. I wish you didn't have to deal with freaks like this to begin with but good for you for keeping at it.
Take care,
Jim |

| That's true about the snow but I guess you could place it near where he parks and try and get the licence number of the car or truck. All you would have to do and check reservations and make sure it's not a club member's truck or something. Might even get a pick of the guy or girl as they are getting out. Not proof but a place to start I guess |

Problem with the camera though is if it flashes they will probably see it. Then steal it. Unless its an infrared. One option is if you think the situation is serious enough you can get the sherrif/DNR involved right now. Let them know whats going on and they will start to watch the area. If they see anyone they'll stop them and interrogate. Just make sure you have the property posted. I did get a picture of a trespasser in Hillsdale this summer. It was a lady. Or 2-legged deer depending on how you look at it. Think she was hunting mushrooms. I then started seeing her after that. She lives in a house by the property and rides around on a lawnmower. Another thing is I caught and had a good discussion with another culprit this gun season. Guy shot a 5 point buck off our property right in front of a member. I caught him right after Thanksgiving. I seen him again so sat under a pine tree until he came back. He got about 10 yards away and I jumped out and said we needed to talk. So we had our discussion. If he does something this blatant again we are going to prosecute. I actually met this guy during the summer when I was posting and explained who we were. At that time he told me was was hunting our property but would stop. Then he turns around and does it anyway right in front of members no less. Needless to say I was pretty fired up over that and tracked him down. Got another situation happening in Hillsdale between our 120 and 121 units. People are trespassing on the 80 acres between these units. I found a dead button buck laying on 121 that came out of there and Todd found a buck with the head cut off on 120 that came out of there. We are in the process of trying to shut this operation down though. I found the landowner who lives in Conneticut and he is now aware of whats happening on his property. He has no idea who's trespassing on it but did say NO ONE has ever been given permission to be on it. Been working with John Benedict on this and we have sent the landowner a lease agreement offer to lease his land. The guy has told me he wants to lease to us and is in the process of reviewing the information. We are hopeful that a deal gets done January 1st. If so, I'm going to put together an outing to HEAVILY post this new unit and start to shut the trespassers/poachers down. Stay tuned.

Paul Why did we not prosecute the guy who shot the 5 point? He had enough info to know he was trespassing. If you talked with him during the summer. He said he was not going on the propeerty anymore. He knew he was sneaking in. I think we should have a zero tolerance.

Well, its a tough call I guess and I made a decision on the spot. He's actually sitting on a fence line on his property but shooting into our property. He shot the deer about 20 yards inside our property line and about 40 yards in front of a member that was also watching the deer.
I didn't find out about the incident until a week after it happened. Once I did I pursued it and tracked the guy down right after Thanksgiving. I caught him sitting about 20 yards off our property line but facing into our property. And to top it off my son was sitting about 60 yards beyond where he was facing. That fired me up even more. Safety. In my discussion I scolded him pretty good (gentlemanly like but damn good). I was fired up because he told me one thing then went ahead and did it anyway. We had a verbal agreement and gentlemans handshake and he broke that. So he will live by that now. I told him we were considering prosecution. After out talk, I extended an offer to him to put this incident behind us; however, it won't be tolerated again. He's actually a nice fella and was pretty scared I could tell. He's just trying to put some meals on the table. I told him if he hunts this boundary line I expect him to hunt HIS property not ours. He owns the 10 acres on south side of our 122 F unit and half of the fence line that separates them. So he has legal rights to be in the vicinity. I also told him our members will respect the same arrangement. I made it very clear that one more incident of this type will involve prosection. On a personal level I hate to see that happen. Causes everybody a lot of time, pain, and money. So from my heart I made a decision to forgive the guy this one time. But thats it. He's had his chance and leaves us no recourse if he does it again. So he understands that and now its his chocie. So if he does it again we will need to move forward with prosecuting him. Otherwise they wont take us serious.
I can relate to the zero tolerance thought. But somehow deep inside I also hope there can remain a respectful human element to it. Been doing this stuff 30 years and could tell story after story of problems between friends and even family over the emotions involved with hunting. Almost every year you hear stories of folks getting shot over this type of thing. So there's even a danger aspect to it. If you get a chance ask John Benedict about a situation he knows of where a farmers son was killed confronting trespassers. We have one nut in Hillsdale that told Todd he "shoots first" and asks questions later. Anyhow, I have no problem dealing with these people just have alot of experience and from all that have a certain approach I try to use. I'm not against forgiving once and giving someone a second chance. But beyond that, its take care of business time.

I have pulled all my traps from property 104. This has nothing to do with the tresspasser, I'm still hoping to catch him and I believe I will prior to the end of the season. After talking with Todd and conisdering what I seen from his tracks and the location of where he was going I believe this person was posibly bird hunting out there. I'm not sure if I will put them back out there or not? I have found a young man that is willing to teach me to trap. Hopefully by this time next year I have a better idea of what I'm doing and can do better at removing some of the targeted animals. I had 10 conibears set for mink the past 7 days I was out there out of that I took 5 muskrats. I also found out that I might have been in the area (checking) to much, with this type of trap you don't have to check every day like I was doing. I'm hopeing to get back out there prior to the end of season with some more knolage of what I'm doing and truely remove some mink and posibly some coons if the weather breaks. He also said he would be willing to show me how to trap fox/coyote so maybe I can even get some of them. I have untill the end of January for both mink and coons, and untill the first or end of march I beileve for fox and coyote I will have to check into that.

In addition to what Paul said, very seldom can you get a prosecution ont he guy for the first offense. Now he has been warned, and we have witnesses to the incident, and the warning. One thing we might need to do (Paul) is let the local CO know what happened, and that if the CO sees this guy on the property that we want to press charges immediately.
Good luck Frank, I hope you can figure it out. Would really like to see some of the coons gone off the property.

FYI, I have placed my traps back out on property 104 unit C. I did this thursday, well I went and checked them today. To my suprise I finely caught a big buck mink, it messured 24 inches from the nose to the base of the tail on the drying board. The guy I get my trap supplys from said it was a "very big mink" so I think it might be a good one. As this is my first mink ever I'm not sure, I'm hoping this wont be my last one though. I didn't even get any pictures to send to Todd as I was so excited that I took it right over there as he told me he would guied me on skining it and putting it up (on the drying board). I have 2 bucket sets out for the coon, with the cold front comming in I'm not very hopeful of getting any but will continue to try untill the end of January when the season ends.
Also the tresspasser was back on the property around Christmas time he drove up to one of the signs. It looked like he seen the sign and turned around with out going onto club property.

Congrats Frank, Nice job on the mink, how many more do you need for a new mink coat?
That is pretty impressive, catching coons & minks, chasing trespassers, whats next coyotes maybe?
Anyone want to put together a project for some woodduck houses for 104?
Anyone have any knowledge of groups that build or would build the houses if we supplied the money or materials?
I would be interested in helping.

Don, I have tried setting some coyote traps out on 104. That was actually the set I caught the coon in. I havent seen their tracks out there the last few times out there. I have only seen 1 set of fox tracks out there and 2 sets of coyote's I think this is a pair that are running together as there is always 2 sets. I'm hoping to get the coyote's also but this is harder then traping coons, I'm not sure if its easier or harder then mink as I've had mink sets out sence starting and have only caught 1. It would take alot more mink for a coat then what I have gotten so far.

About the Wood Duck houses. Do you have plans on how to build the houses? And how many are you thinking? Reason I ask is my son became an Eagle Scout in a Boy Scout troop last year and they do alot of that type of stuff. They may be interested in taking something like this on. Especially if we provided the materials and some plans on how to build them. I know the Scoutmaster pretty good and could talk with him. Just an idea.

Well I have caught 1 of the tresspassers today, it was the neighbor kids. I believe I have put the fear of Frank into them. I also asked them to get the license plate number of any vichel with out a ASC member tag in the window, they agreed to do this for me. They admited that they where out there coyote hunting.
