Ok who got what? I was hunting out on property 116 unit E. Got to the property about 5:50am this morning. Was trying a new area on this unit from years past, tryed the west end instead of the east side. Well it worked out for me I shot a nice doe about 7:30am. She came in from down wind (north) and walked with in 20 yards quartering at me. Well the New Bow did its job and the arrow flew true. I hit her right in the top/front of the sholder didn't get a complete pass throu (I still don't like the no pass throu). She ran about 70 yards and died about 50 yards from My treestand. Took 1 lung and top to bottom throu the heart nice blood trail.

I would like to add I put my stand in the wroung tree. I was in the process of moveing around the tree when I seen this deer and 2 others. I was facing to the west hoping for a shot in the apple trees right at the south/west corner of the unit. Well I decided that it would be best if I moved around the tree so I was facing to the south/east. When I got my body turned around in the climber and moved about half way around the tree I caught movement out of the corner of my eye to the north. The rest is above. I seen a total of 5 deer on this unit this morning 4 where does and the other was a nice buck (don't know how big) but the horns where out side his ears. I seen him when I came back to the woods with the deer cart. He was about 60 yards north of my stand getting ready to cross the trail to the north/west.

One thing I for got to say was I was taking revenge on the deer population. Sunday my Uncle and I where out on property 104 and had a deer literly run us over. I ended up with a goose egg on my lower left leg, My uncle ended up with a broken right leg. We where walking down one of the dykes when this deer came at us on a dead run. He hit me then bounced off me and hit my Uncle. We don't know if the deer was big/small or buck/doe neither of us seen it's head nor could we tell how big it was. It was all over but the crying in less then a secound.

Great work Frank. I was in D on 116 and saw all sorts of wildlife. Unfortunalty my only opportunity on a deer was at 45 yards through some brush. The doe hung up and blew at me 4 times then walked the other way. Had 3 turkeys fly down and almost land on my pop up blind and saw a hawk scoop up a squirrel. I will keep a eye out for the rogue deer out on 104. Thanks for the note about E.
take care,
Andrew

I'm back after a whirlwind 3 day hunt. Jason Lucas and I hunted the Henry County on Saturday and Sunday, then up to Hillsdale, yesterday.

Saturday morning was nice, low 50's and a bit foggy. Thought for sure we would see some deer. Jason did see two does across the gully who were blowing at Fred Downs. He was sitting on the ground, and they popped out so close he couldn't move. I saw nothing but squirrels. Saturday evening, I switched stands and didn't see anything until I almost got back to the truck after dark. Jumped a big deer almost 50 yds from the truck.

Sunday morning, I was back in the E unit and saw 8 does. Had one come through at 30 yds and was drawn on her, but she was on a mission and I couldn't get her to stop in the open. Sunday evening, I moved back into the woods a bit to a patch of oaks that were dropping acorns. I had seen 2 deer feed in there and figured that was my best chance, but never saw another deer.

Yesterday, we were planning to sit until the rain started, then wait it out and finish the day off. Well, the weather man was a bit off on the 10 am timing. First drops hit around 8 am. I had a deer come in on my while I was getting into my stand. Ran in from the corn, stopped watched me for a couple seconds, then ran back into the corn towards Jason. Jason saw it just before sunup and is pretty sure it was a small buck. At 8:30 got down and had breakfast. Rains died down, so we were back out about 10:00 am or so. Sat the rest of the day until about 6pm when the rain came back and it was obvious it wasn't letting up, we called it a night. Jason saw a doe and her fawn in that time, I saw 2 squirrels.

From our observations, the deer are spending most of their time in the corn. Every deer we saw was in the corn, and just working the edges before going back in. Oh, and the mosquitos were terrible. Without my Thermacell, I think I'd have needed a transfusion. That's one of my theories on why the deer are in the corn so much, the bugs are pushing them there and they won't come out until it is too cold for the bugs.

I took a small doe off 115 last night. There aren't too many spots for a climber, so I've been on the ground there near some trails into the bean field. The beans are ready for cutting and I wanted to get one before they harvested them.

Got sick of getting snorted at two nights in a row, so I left my spot and tucked myself in off the trail where I couldn't be seen. Left me with only one shooting lane at about 8 yards, so I had to be ready. I heard a couple coming in, but couldn't see them until they got into the lane. All my practice paid off since the arrow hit perfectly and she didn't run off. I've only had a couple kills on deer in my life, and this is the first one where the meat was in really good shape. Someday someone should show me how to dress one quickly though :)

I just want to say thanks to the club. I've been hunting as a kid with my dad before he passed, but we never had any good private land to hunt. I stopped hunting for quite a few years because of it. I couldn't tell you how many days I've hunted without seeing any deer on state land. I've been fortunate to see deer each time out so far this year in Ohio and Michigan. I want to thank the managers who select all of our properties for leasing... they are truely beautiful. I've had the time of my life scouting these properties this summer, and I've had a great time hunting so far.

Thanks again,

Congrats Brian. Always good to hear when a plan comes through, and gives those of us not doing so well some hope.

Congrats Brian
You have to love it when a plan comes together. You might want to consider doing a clean job instead of a fast job. I'm glad to hear someone got a deer out on the 115 property I was thinking of going out there this season but havent made it out as of yet.

Brian,

That is a very inspirational story! I'm hoping to bow kill a deer on the ground this year myself. Way to go.

I went old school myself, ground hunting on the 119. Hit a nice 6 pt. when he came in to use a rubbing limb. Sad to say it wasn't a quality shot, no vitals hit. Thanks again to Todd who came out the next day to show me some tracking skills. Eventually found deer in cornfield running at full speed.

Well Jeff don't think your the only person to loose a deer. Last year I shot a nice doe out on 116, the arrow hit right where I wanted (in the front sholder) and I lost her due to no blood.

I'm happy to report my Son shot a nice doe hunting with his buddy. First shot was at 15 yards and he wiffed (right over the back) Secound shot 25 yards and BAM he hit her ( right in the Butt) luckily for him the deer turned quatering away and he hit the fermoral (sp? I think that is the one in the back leggs) and up to her lungs. Followed a 60 yard blood trail to her piled up. He ended up giving it to his buddys family for letting him hunt thier property. The THUNDER HEADS do thier job 1 more time. He says she was about 140lbs (so reality is probly about 120 or so).

I plan on going out to property 116 again tomorrow and try my luck for a Turkey/Deer hunt. I'm going to try and get that big buck that is rummered to be out there.

Glad to hear about your deer Brian. Dean will be happy to hear that.
I am holding off on deer until it cools off again. I will most likey head back to the UP one more time trying to fill my bear tag. I really don't get to serious about deer until the end of this month.

I only use Thunderheads. I have had good luck so why change.

Well, I whiffed on a doe last night. I had climbed high to keep my wind out of a run I was watching. Doe came out of the corn about 6pm and stopped broadside, 30 yds. I knew I had to shoot high because of the height I was at if I wanted to get both lungs, but dropped the pin low and shaved hair off her armpit. Watched her for 15 minutes and then tracked her almost 200 yds with no blood, just hair on my arrow and at the shot site. Worst part is the arrow went right where I had the pin, just couldn't get myself to bring it up where it needed to be.

I wiffed on a nice doe on Saturday night, too, out in Yale. My sights were wobbly and I went in and had everything tuned up Saturday morning. When I drew, though, I couldn't find the pin and panicked and missed. Afterwards I figured it out, and the next deer through ten minutes later was a small buck. Could only count 4 points with very tiny stickers so I passed on him.

I swore I wouldn't touch my gear mid-season, but I had too. Gonna practice tonight some more to get my instictive "under-pressure" shot back.

Sorry for the late check in I was out of town on for work last week. Anyhow I got a doe out on 116 unit E on the Saturday the 13th.
I got out there around 5:30 and was set up by 6:20 after dropping my backpack with my coat, release, food, H2O and binoculars I thought I was in for a long day early. Good thing from experience (aka past screw ups) I keep a extra release in my climbing vest so was able to hunt even though early it was chilly with out a coat.
Anyhow around 8:30 I catch movement from the corner of my eye. Coming from the field to the SE 3 does around 50 yards away heading toward the trail to the bedding area and from the W 2 does only 15 yds away but on the trail behind with no shot. The 3 does stay out of range slowing moving to the N, the other 2 continue on the trail behind me and I have a lane cleared on the other side of the tree. As they were behind me I drew the bow back and aimed to my spot waiting for her to get there. She did get there but just a little farther away than planned when cutting lanes. She was quartering away a little less than 35 yards I made a good shot with a lot of blood trail which I was following but not fast enough because my friend Todd also a member found her just off the trail when coming over from unit D to help he found her about 50 yards away from where I shot her. Sorry for the long story.
Good and safe hunting to everyone.

Wow sounds like the deer are really starting to move. I think this warm weather is going to shut them down again. Congrats Andrew sounds like your having fun out there any how. Its a good thing you carry a extra release.

Brian I have had that same problem with my sights comming loose in the middle of the season. I now use loc-tite on every thing that uses screws to connect to the bow.

P.S.
