Well, I pulled the trigger on a new bird dog. I know the club has strong groups who favor short haired and another favoring long haired dogs. I am crossing over to what Todd A. would consider the dark side. I am getting a Vizsla, and man do they have short hair. Anyway, the dogs were bred last week, and assuming it takes, I will have pick of the litter around Christmas. I am pumped!

Good job Greg
I'm glad to see some in the club have the nerve to stay with the Short haired dogs (only joking). I wish you and your new puppy lots of sucess. I have never hunted with a Vizsla but I only hear good things about them.

I guess I'll be a real outcast when I get a lab and use him/her for bird hunting.

Congrats on the new dog!

I am with you Frank. Short hairs are the superior dogs, regardless of what Todd says. Socks, the lab is one you can't go wrong with. Mine will point, your can flush, great team!

Lab, Brit, GSP, Vizsla all good dogs. Thank God you didn't try to be trendy and get something with the word doodle in it then title then try and call it a hunting dog :)

Man, try to steer a guy in the right direction and he goes and does a 180 on you! You're as bad as my wife, do the opposite of what I suggest! When you're ready to train him, we can take him out with my long hairs so he can see how it is supposed to be done.

Regardless of the banter, all breeds have good and bad dogs. It's the old Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge argument. I'm sure you'll have many great days ahead of you. Come to think of it, I think Bob King has a Vizsla.

Todd
You say you are "NOT" on the dark side. Why is it most of the AKC titled dogs are shot haired? I think if you run your "long haird" dogs with Gregs they just might figure out how to find a bird in the field. You know I have heard a old saying "even a blind hog will find a acorn every once in a while".

ONLY JOKING WITH YA.

I have hunted with your hounds and Both of them (Ted and Cooper) are some nice hounds. By the way when you going to come up and do some Grouse and Woodcock hunting up here? I went out last sunday for about 2.5-3 hours and we seen 4 birds and thought we had 2 other flushs but wasn't sure. We never did get a shot at any of them. That is with my Uncle getting turned around and adding 45 minutes to the one cover that should have only took about 30 minutes to hunt.

Frank,
I want to get up there something fierce, but with soccer, my weekends are pretty busy. I am going to try to get out in the morning. I have to be careful with the old dog, he doesn't take the heat like he used to.

Jason Lucas and I ran them on 123 last weekend, and Cooper pointed 2 roosters and a hen.

Well I have owned a V. We just got rid of her last Spring because we were never home. She had to have human attention (hence the Velcro description). If not they will be a nervous reck. As far as a hunting dog....I have owned a shorthair for 14 years. I loved her but no way did she measure up to the nose this V had. Our shorthair was a heck of a hunting dog. The only drawback on the V was she did not like to retrieve.
A V is a good dog. If you want a dog that stays close and does not range far. You will be happy with this breed. I still really miss our dog.

Greg, I hunted with a buddy who has a vizsla for grouse over the weekend. She did great for a 18 month old dog and was holding point on birds on multiple ocassasions until my lab flushed them out. I am really impressed with how much the dog has progressed the last year, and think training with live birds has helped a lot.

Thanks Scott. I hope mine does as well. I plan to work very hard at training this dog myself. I hope one day the pup holds point not only at the flush, but also through to the shot until released for the retrieve. We will see. In the end I will happy if the dog will point and hold long enough for a flush. Maybe we can get your seasoned dog out with my rookie for a hunt next year.
