With my computer being down, been slow getting this report up.
Thanks to the vote last fall, MI economy (once again) didn't get any of my Labor Day weekend money. Headed to our usual spot in Clyde, OH for doves with my two boys, and my buddy Glen. Jim Cavanaugh and his son Luke joined us, as well. I anticipated a lot of people given it was a Saturday opener, but it was really not all that bad. We ended up nearly right where we wanted to be, and there was no lack of birds. Not as good as in some previous years, but plenty of shooting to be had by all. I managed to bag my 15 bird limit in the first hour of shooting, and even guided my oldest boy through a box of shells. We were off the fields around 10 am with I believe 43 birds (2 shy of a three person limit). Spent the rest of the day lounging in the motel, and at the pool with the boys.
Next morning was a lot slower, and a lot fewer hunters. John Utley came over with his wife and some friends and met us at the field. Since the shooting was slow, I took John and his group to another field, then swung back to Clyde to meet Ed Utley and his 2 kids, and took them out to our first field. I managed to shoot 3 birds amid all the running around and, also, spent some time with my oldest (Evan) so he could shoot. We left the field about 11 am with a lot fewer birds (8 or 9). Jim and Ed headed home, and the kids were pretty tired so we didn't hunt the evening. In fact, my 4yr old (Ryan) literally passed out in mid-chew while eating lunch.
Monday was warm right off the bat. We headed to a different field, and I had birds buzz us while setting up. Unfortunately, the heat hit fast, and the birds just stopped flying before we could even get a shot off. Glen managed to tag one, but after 2 hrs, we called it a day, packed up and headed home.
It was great to be out in the fields after a long summer, and we did pretty fair for the time spent in the fields. The kids all had fun, and my oldest has taken a new interest in hunting, now that he can actively participate.

I was wondering how you did down there. Glad to hear you had a good time and got some birds. The weather was defintely hot for hunting. Did you hunt any ASC property in OH?

No ASC property for this hunt, all public land. I've been hunting this same area for close to 10 years and have done well there. Plus my experience with the Henry property is that the birds do not use it until late in the year (after the season is over). I did fair on the Union property last fall, but didn't feel like making the drive this year. If I had scouted it a bit and knew there were birds there, i would have went down. I am going to the Henry property this weekend to scout and set stands and maybe shoot a few squirrels or doves if they are around.
