I just finished my red tape event with our county "Farm service agency". One thing our government does is track what every farm acre is used for. The numbers show roughly 14.6 acres of grass-weeds for pheasants in unit C and 13.9 acres in unit B. If anyone needs more walking I abtained permission from my good neighbor to the east to hunt pheasants only on her property. This is approximatly 14 acres. The west side is bordered by unit B and the east side by "T" post with pink flaging. You will probably not see anyone but if you do you are part of the Dan Gromek pheasant hunting party. I installed a small pond (20'x30') at the north west corner of Unit B. Looks like it will hold water year round. On that note I would like to release Quail in this area. Anyone know where we can get some strong hardy type Quail?

Dan,
In response to your question about obtaining "good hardy quail" - I am a member of Farmland Pheasants near Brown City. The proprietor is Preston Mann. I do not know where he gets his quail, but they (and his pheasants as well) are very strong fliers. His # is 810-346-3672, or if you like I could call him and ask.

| Hi Rex. I would very much appreciate your checking on obtaining some quail. I would like to release 12 or so and see if they expand. I have been researching and find I have excellent habitat for them. Just one problem, to many skunks and racoons. They are very hard on nesting birds, pheasants included. I have been trapping out the skunks to protect my beehive but need help with the racoons. Anyone want to organize a daytime hunt? All you need is a .22 rifle and good eyes to see them up in the trees. Dan |

Dan, Is the neighbor property part of the acreage you sold from your farm? Trying to get a handle on where it is at.

Todd. Yes the area is part of what I sold. It is basically the southwest part of the old unit A. I wish all the pheasant hunters luck this season. These wild birds are not easy. |

Hey Dan Do you think your neighbor would have a issue with us running beagles for rabbits over there?

| Hi Willy. No problem running beagles for rabbits on this property. However, there is another neighbor who owns 10 acres and tells me he and his father plan on hunting there 10 for pheasants this year. Can you keep the dogs from straying? Unit E and D have many tree tops on the ground from last years harvest that should help the rabbits. Also, we have recently built several new brush piles in Unit D. Good luck Dan |

Dan, I heard back from the people at Farmland Pheasants about their quail. I am a member of their hunting club and they will be glad to sell you some quail for $3.75 each. Just contact Pat at the club (810-346-3672) and tell her you are the friend of mine that I mentioned to her. They are located northwest of Brown City a few miles, visit www.farmlandpheasant.com for location.
Even though these will be "quality" birds, I am not very optimistic that pen-raised quail will survive without some help. Here are two websites with some information that might help you. www.qualitywildlife.com and www.quailrestoration.com Each of the sponsors of these websites sell products for quail restoration.

Thankyou very much for the info Rex. I am going to wait until late spring to plant the quail to give them the best chance. My research tells me we have good quail habitat here. My wife reminds me that I am retired now and have to watch the spending. If anyone would like to contribute let me know, perhaps we could afford a feeder etc. I was crossing unit B recently and came across a big rooster. It is amazing to watch a big ball of feathers defy gravity. A reminder for anyone hunting unit B. You can hunt right up to my pasture fence. of course no shooting into the pasture. A reminder that no one should walk into the soybeans until after harvest. Retrieving game is an exception. Thanks Dan |

Dan, Thanks for the update. I'll see what I can do from the club to help out with the quail restoration. If nothing else, I can contribute some money toward such a worthy cause. Also, I have some experience with different options to help quail survive (they actually do much better than pheasants). We can set up some feeding/cover stations fairly cheap with an idea I got from a Kansas outfitter.
Also, a reminder to folks hunting out there that quail are off limits on 116 at this time. Pheasants only.

| The soybeans have been harvested today. Should be a lot easier to find the birds. Good luck! |
