Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone has given thought to a controlled burn out there to make it regrow even better. Is that kind of thing even a option? I know my brother is a firefighter and people sometimes donote the use of the feild for training sake. That could be a way to save money.

Hey Willie, Paul Lorenc here. Not sure if I missed some other converstaions but it seems you have some ideas on how to improve this unit. You got time to go into some detail?

Well I don't know all details but I had heard that those Phesant forever guys on occation burn feilds out and the grassy cover comes back twice as thick. It was just a thought. I wonder if running a bush hog through there would be the same thing.

You should see it now. Flat as a pancake for the most part. The burning they usually do is for rejuvenation of prarie grasses. Not sure it would help there. From talking with Mike, the farmer may be able to put in some strips of sorgham for us. That would be a huge improvement. Will know more later.

Hey Willie,

Thats a good idea, but like Todd said not sure if it would work or not. Although, I remember brush hogging down a grass field by my old home and the coming years it turned into the best black berry picking patches. So, it may just need some brush hogging activity to get the seeds to germanate. That property is in the CRP and after so many years the grasses may choke out the new growth opp.'s? I don't know. But, the reason why we have appointed new land managers for each regions are for these kinds of questions and reasons as well. So, Mr. Paul Lorenc can take a look at this property and see with the help of our landowner what are our options and what the expenses would be, if any. I would guess brush hogging would create some new growth, but we'll see. Thank you for your thoughts Will.

I'll mark that down as a priority for near future when in Hillsdale. Will be there this weekend but taking my new (or should say old) 14ft. aluminum fishing boat there. I bought a 1957 Crestliner. "Dont make'm like this anymore" they say. Hope it floats.

Todd - Would you have the landowners contact info. I think Bob's the Dad and Scott's the son. I've talked with Scott before.

Hey Paul,

I can get that to you.

No Problem. Let's talk on the phone. I have a few other parcels that Scott owns that I'm looking to add and switch out the 127 and 128. I'll explain on the phone.

Thanks Paul. This is going to be helpful.

Dad and I saw it last week when we went rabbit hunting out there. That is where the idea came from.

I would have to guess that brush hogging is out of the question. There are restrictions on the mowing of CRP property.

CRP can be mowed ussually after August 1 to remove woody growth

If this unit is in the CRP program it needs to be mowed or burned due to the amount of willows taking over the area.

I used to have land in crp program and I had to mow mine to keep the trees out of it.

We'll take steps to see what we can do. If the landowner agrees, maybe we can get a partial burn this spring, then maybe mow part of it. We may even be able to do a mowing this spring before it greens up too much.

Another idea

with the heavy ground cover a light disking would also get some new weed growth going and improve the habitat for broods this spring.
