Would like to get together with anyone that wants to goose hunt in January. I have 2 dozen shells and 6 floaters (some with flocked heads) and a standup string operated flapper goose. Enough guys with enough decoys maybe we can pull in some geese, saw the geese feeding in the cut corn in front and in back fields by the farmers house on the Hillsdale property on 12/8. Any interest?

Sounds Good Don. I have a customer on the automotive side of things, that's been hinting about goose hunting. I don't own a decoy and I haven't hunted specifically goose before at all. So if you can provide the decoys and guidance, I can retrieve the geese . I'll let you know more as I find out the schedule for January. What are the goose season dates in January?

Goose hunting is 12/31/06-01/29/07.
If it was my customer I would go with a professional guide. They are setup to do it right. And they scout the fields all the time. Being where the birds want to be is the key.
Our hunt could be great, could be a bust, but always fun. Just do not want to give anyone the impression that I know what I am doing and will get them into birds.
That is why I am suggesting a group hunt hoping that we get enough guys with decoys, experiance, goose calling skills and lots of good luck.
It will be hard to hide more than 4-6 guys in a field. Hoping for a couple guys with decoys, couple guys that can call, couple guys with shotguns or something like that. I have dog, decoys, & gun but can't call. I can work my goose flapper.
Once we know who wants to go, then we can split up the scouting duties and figure out where and when to hunt. We can also hunt multiple fields and areas. Maybe an overnight road trip to the cass property? Maybe George & AJ know the potential there and possible hotels?
This is starting to sound like an organizing job for superman aka Todd Alexander. Come on Todd jump in "You know you want to" LOL

Ok, Don, you asked for it.
Regarding professional guiedes, I remember a couple of hunts with YOUR professionals that were less than stellar.
Anyway, I would be game for this adventure. I know the geese have been using 103 off and on, 118 has had birds on and around it most of the season. I'll most likely be spending some time in Hillsdale this weekend. Plus, I really want to get out to Cass, myself. Maybe Chad can chime in on what he has been seeing in relation to geese out there, as well as Bob and his crew. If this weather keeps up, it is going to be hard. Lotsa water for the birds. I will be in town for New Years, but not sure if I will be deer hunting or not.

I have hunted with a guide out of Jackson Co. with some pretty good sucess. His name was Sunny Jackson I believe it's been over 15 years sence I was down that way. I can't recall where it was exactualy but I'm sure that if the Jackson propertys have corn on them they should also hold some geese. I also know that the Genesse propertys have geese that hang around when the corn is cut.
Todd you should join us in this adventure it should be lots of fun.

Kuch The type of goose hunting you plan on doing most depends on the type of decoy's you need. In most cases you cant go wroung with shells that also float. I like a mixed bag of decoys for goose hunting, I have 7 big foot, 17 shells and 12 floaters (most of the floaters are in need of paint) Also you cant go worng with a dozen or so silloets for field hunting.
I also have a 3 person hay house blind and calls.

Count me in on the goose hunts. I don't have many decoys - 4 floaters and 2 shells, but I have plenty of enthusiasm!!

I have been by the Genesee propertys and the corn has been cut on them all. I will start going by them around the 26th to find out if there is geese using them or not. I know the last 2 years I have done fairly well in the late season out there, havent killed many geese but have seen lots.

Frank, What about the rags or whatever they call them I see put out in fields in big numbers by goose hunters on TV? Either way I will make a run to Cabela's after Christmas.

Kuch I have never personaly used rag decoys, I believe they are mostly for Snow goose hunting? I know of people that have used what was called hawkeye decoys, these where a flat decoy silloet that just laid on the ground. The best decoy for both water/field hunting in my opion is a 747 mag shell decoy, this thing is big and floats real well it has a changeable head for feeder or sentry postion.
I have found a new style of wind sock decoy that I'm intrested in, its from DeadlyDecoy Co. I'm thinking of ordering some but not sure when I'll be doing it. This is also a good type of decoy for field hunting as it adds lots of motion to you decoys. The old wind socks if the wind was under 5mph they didn't work very well as they would lay down the stake. The price of the DeadlyDecoy's is $89.00 for a dozen with heads not to bad considering. These decoys are supose to have a back bone that spreads out the decoy body if there is no wind.

We have started to buy the new goose decoys with the flocking? its a black velvet or felt type material on the head makes them very realistic, but they are very costly, I think you can even buy kits to apply the flocking to the heads of your old decoys, my buddy also uses old socks to cover and protect the heads, like covers for golf clubs.
