I'm toying with the idea of a late season pheasant hunt (toward year end). I have gone through some harvest reports from the sister clubs but info is pretty sparse.
Anyone have some good info on such a trip, particularly to Iowa?
Thanks,
Jim

I hear you Bob, S.D. reigns supreme when it comes to pheasants. I guess I just don't have the excitement (or youthful enthusiasm like I used to) to drive that distance into another winter on the northern plains (I lived 3 years in Southern Minnesota back in the 1990's and hunted MN,IA, SD). It is brutal even by Michigan standards.
I looked closer at the Hunting Sports Plus info and it looks like I could put something together on some of their property in Southern Iowa. Which leads to me to ask: 1. How would I go about making arrangements if I decided to make sucha trip? 2. What fees, if any, would be associated with a trip like this?
Feel free to email or PM me if you like.
Thanks,
Jim |

This question comes up at a perfect time. I just had good friend return from hunting both Iowa and S. Dakota.
The Iowa guys hunted for 3 days on a 5 day trip and came home early. They had access to 1,000s of acres of private land, and flushed a total of 4 roosters, bringing 1 back.
My buddy who just got back from S. Dakota did better, although he said it was the worst year in 17 yrs of going out there. They hunted mainly public land, 3 guys in 5 days shot 35 rooosters. Last year, same place, 3 of us shot 44 in the same time.
Regarding the club property I hunted in S. Dakota last year, we had our 3 man limit in about 20 minutes of hunting, and should have been less if we had shot halfway straight. I hunted farm 11551. I see from the reports they are not seeing a lot of birds on them. I have to wonder what the crops are that are in the field. Unit W had a lot of low spots with good cover in it and was the best of the 3 for holding birds. If those units are corn this year, the guys hunting them may not realize where the good cover is. We easily flushed 300+ birds off those three units the day we hunted it, not to mention a couple coveys of sharptails.
As far as reserving the property, you will have to call the AWA office to make reservations. How many units, how far in advance, and cost will vary from club to club. For S. Dakota, you will be using Hunt Sport Plus land. They won't let you reserve until 9 days before and you can only reserve 1 unit. Then the day before you can add more units if they are not reserved. Cost was $35/person/day last year for the S. Dakota property, and worth every penny.
Kansas may be another option for you. I leave tonight for a week of archery deer hunting and will report back as soon as I'm back.

Just wanted to say that we did see 3 coveys of quail while we were deer hunting in KS. However because of the limitations on how much property we could reserve (even though the adjacent properties were unused while we were out there), I would not recommend the properties we hunted for a dedicated bird hunt. Just not enough birds to support a week long hunt. Maybe 1 or 2 days on each farm, but you could pretty much hunt the entire 340 acres we hunted deer on in about 3-4 hrs, max.
IMHO, S.Dakota is a much better option.

Well, it looks like like I am heading to South Eastern S.D. end of this month for a 3 day hunt. However, I have decided not to go the club route on this trip. I've been speaking with a guide I hunted with 4 years ago out there and have worked out some quality arrangements.
Thanks for the insight guys and please help me with prayers for ice free roads! |

Good luck Jim, Be prepared for low bird numbers, unless the guide releases birds. Everyone I've talked to that has been out there has said numbers are woefully low. Still lots of birds, just not what folks are used to.
