Well, made it up today. Stopped along M-65 near the AuSable crossing and let the dogs stretch. I have a small 5 acre cover that usually holds birds. Today was no different. My setter, Cooper, crossed the power line at full speed, hit the cover and skidded sideways into a point. His back legs went out from under him, but he had the bird pinned so hard, he wouldn't stand back up, just pointed where he lay. I walked in, woodcock flushed and shot. Not a bad start. Ted retrieved it to hand, and Cooper was on a second point not a minute later. This one didn't give me a shot. Ryan was having a ball following me through the trees to get to the points. Next point both dogs started creeping on, so I circled to the left and sent them right. Started to cross a small opening and a young grouse flushed and was brought down. After that, Cooper busted 2 more woodcock without a point. Not a bad start with the high winds.

At my folks place, Ryan and I unpacked and hit one of my favorite covers near the house. Ran both dogs for an hour and flushed 4 more woodcock, but no shots. Had one point on what I'm nearly sure was a grouse, but he heard us coming and left the scene. Ryan did great walking nearly 2 miles with me today, plus spending 4 hrs plus in the truck. Will be out in the morning. I'll keep you updated.

Cell reception is terrible up here, none at the house and my voicemail doesn't let me know if I have a message, so I will check it when I can, but don't expect to hear back from me too soon.

Oh, and I saw 13 deer in our evening hunt. This in an area that the deer have been wiped out according to many local deer hunters.
