Does anyone know how deep the water is on unit F? Can one wade across or is a boat needed to retrieve decoys? I will be hunting that unit Saturday morning and haven't had a chance to hunt it in the past.

Hello Scott
I was out there in the spring and it was shallow in the middle, I don't know if its wadeable on acount of the weeds. If unit F is the one at the east end of the big field then I would have to say that you would need a boat, if its the one on the west end of (or part of the chanel) I would say no its defently not wadeable. I believe the land owner has a small flat bottom boat on the east end of the big field on the north side of the property.I personaly havent been out there sence the spring so I'm not to sure on the water depth. I just looked at the map and yes unit F is the one I was refering to with the flatbottom boat and I don't think you can get through the weeds if your in the middle, I also believe the edges are fairly deep with mudd. Again I'm not sure if you can wade it or not.

Personaly if I was going out there for the duck opener I would hunt unit B, there is a little marsh that is on the south side of the chanel that runs east/west. If your looking at the map on the Team -ASC page its just above the U in unit B I know this little pond is wadeable. It would also allow you to pass shoot ducks flying down the dykes. Also just my opion but I wouldn't use more then a 1/2 dozen decoys. hope this helps Scott.

Scott, I'll be hunting E on Sat morning. Unit F is too deep to wade in the southwest corner. That is where the flatbottom boat is located. I am bringing a canoe to get to unit E as the canals are too deep to wade.

See you Sat,

Last year the north end of Unit F was wadeable, just above knee deep, but it drops off fast as you head south. I used the boat in the SW corner of F (it belongs to the landowner, but we can use it). I don't think there were paddles for it, though, I used my push pole.

Thanks for the feedback! I will plan on using the boat to retrieve decoys after the hunt and bring out a paddle. Good luck everyone :)

Jeff, Actually if you don't mind I would like to use one of them. Where would they be located?

The Bear hunting was tuff this year because the weather turned in the U.P. while I was up there last week. Lots of cold rainy weather and unlike deer the bear move better in warmer weather. I had about a 150lb boar come in a few times and then a family unit come in on another bait. We hunted with hounds over the weekend which is a blast. Do to the cold rainy weather Saturday we couldn't find a track of a shooter boar to run so we never got a chase started. Spent the rest of the day enjoying the UP duck opener and limited out with two red head, one ring neck, one green wing teal, a drake mallard, and a hen mallard. Sunday we started a chase on what was thought to be a single female based on the tracks left in the sand around we put around the bait pile. About 20 minutes into the chase 3 dogs had two cubs up in trees with a pissed off sow on the ground that was trying to fight dogs. We let 3 more dogs go in an attempt to tree her so we could round up all of the dogs and get out of dodge. The sow never did tree and punched some holes in one of the dogs. One of the cubs came down from the tree and crossed paths with mom when the dogs all picked up the cubs sent agian and they put the cub up a tree. We used as an opportunity to grab all of the dogs and get out of moms hair. So it was a fun week but no shooters.

One is at my house. I live off of 33 mile and old Van Dyke. It is on the way to the Imlay property. You can pick it up any time. Give me a call.

My family has a cabin and some land on the eastern end of the up between Cedarville and De Tour Village which is the Newberry BMU. The houndsman I was hunting with had blue tick and tree walkers. They are a lot of fun to watch. Have you hunted with you buddy up there?

No I have only hunted for coons it the lower part of the state. I also own a bluetick, at one time I had 4 of them but all where coon dogs and never used for bear or coyote. I have sence went back into the bird hunting and mostly only run GSP's now, the blue dog I own I have had sence he was born I call him the old man (he's 9). I've had him in a pig pen running pigs, now that was a lot of fun. I'm not sure he would be very good at running anything at this time as he was hit by a car this summer an broke his rear leg. I injoyed running the hounds I did that mostly in compatitions though. I now don't have time to run my bird dogs let alone any coon dogs.
