Well my deer season started off great this year. Hunted 119 on Thursday and seen an 8 pt and 3 does. I thought the 8 PT was going to walk out a trail a mere 30 yards in front of me when he decided to mosey down the fence row with his harem and pop out at 120 yards...ugh. They browsed around the beans and I exited my stand at dark...good sign. The next morning found me sitting in my truck wondering when the rain would quit on 126! I headed out anyway and got soaked but oh well seen one decent buck at 200 yards running. Here is where it gets good(sorta) that evening two does come from behind headed to the beans and get broadside slam dunk...I think! Shoot at the second doe and a branch must of hit my arrow as the arrow went a bit back on her (did not realize this until after inspection of the arrow at dark). So anyway 5 minutes go by and there are 4 does in the field the lead doe is a huge grey girl and I mean huge so I let my arrow fly and crack she bucks and takes off across the beans. So dark hits and I discover my first arrow and I sink but then find great blood so I let her sit and go after the old girl I shot out in the field. I find my arrow tip to tip in bright red blood and some blood on the ground call Todd and he Jason, Greg and Jeff make there way over and the search is on. It took four hours and Todd's magic spray (I am buying stock in silver XP)as well as some tracking skills and luck but we found her 500 yards from where she was shot piled up in the corn field the arrow hit through her ribs deflected off bone and came straight out the bottom rather than passing all the way through both lungs it only smoked one of her lungs. Unfortunatley we tracked the next one for two hours and after awesome blood it just dried up by this time it is two in the morning and we call it after an honest effort.
The next day finds me out walking a grid through the corn for another 2.5 hours too no avail... So I decide to go sit and see what shakes out as it is 530PM by this time. I get settled in and here a what sounds like a buck grunting...hmmm okay I think where are ya? Then he walks by in the beans at 30 yards I think naaahhh let him go (4PT) its early and I notice three does out in the field browsing. They wander off and this deer walks by again at 20 yards (looks lost haha) I think again naaah wait. So 5 minutes go by the does are gone and he is standing at 40 yards now broadside and I think well sorry about your luck I am not passing again so I pulled released buckled him...he ran 80 yards and dropped, got up walked 20 more and piled up dead easy retrieve and drag and I was home by 10PM as opposed to 4AM the night before (haha)! WHAT A GREAT WEEKEND LOTS OF DEER SEEN AND HAVE A TON OF VENISON TO SHOW FOR MY EARLY SEASON SCOUTING EFFORTS AND ITS ONLY 3 DAYS INTO THE SEASON AND FIRST YEAR IN THE CLUB!!!
I cannot tell you how grateful I am too fellow members Todd, Greg, Jason and Jeff for all there help Friday night I OWE YOU GUYS BIG TIME and hope to be able to REPAY you for your kindness and efforts in helping me retrieve that hog of a DOE (have to believe she was 130 plus field dressed). I can honeslty say I was a bit leary about joining and how fellow members act/react to one another etc. but this just shows what quality good hearted sportsman are really in this club and in turn these guys went out of there way to help me knowing they may not get up to hunt the next day!!! THANK YOU!!!
-I will now be out after a few does and a wall hanger for my second buck tag they are out there folks I have seen them! Again what a weekend now I have to get to work skinning and butchering!!!

Nice work! I had a pretty good weekend, too. No shots, but learned a bit more about the properties I'm hunting up this way. Hopefully I can seal the deal over the next few weeks.

Isn't silver XP scent eliminator? How did that help track the deer?
That's the frustrating part about hunting at night... I'm terrified of losing deer without any help to track.

Good job congrats on the deer. I have a qustion for you did you see many coons? I will be down that way in a couple weeks and plan on doing some coon hunting along with some deer hunting.
The stuff Todd uses is a blood illimunatior (sp?) it makes the blood glow in a light. If your up in this area and need help trackin a deer give me a call, if possible I will show up with in a hour or so depending on the property your on.

The stuff I used was Blood Glow and can be found here:
http://www.bloodglow.com/
Truly amazing stuff. They have a 4 pack that they say will track 4 deer for $19.99. I was mixing it in an empty Silver XP scent eliminator bottle. We used all 4 packs on that deer, but we were learning a lot using it. I think we could have found that second deer if we had had more of it. The stuff is amazing. Spray in the general area, and turn out the lights, and it lights the blood up, even when you can't see it with the naked eye. We learned that we were using way too much spray to get a reaction, so we could have used a lot less, maybe not as well as the website says, but man did it work.
Managed to kill a small doe myself last night at last light.
And any member that is in the Hillsdale area and needs help tracking just needs to give me a call. If I or one of the other guys are in the area, we will come out and help.

One other thing that I and Jason have found to help us find blood is the Surefire lights. I use the Nitrilon G2 or something like that. They throw a very pure light that makes the blood really stand out. I have a colorblindness issue, and that light is the only one that really works for me. I've seen those special blood tracking lights, and they can't hold a candle to the Surefires.

Are those LED or regular bulbs in those flashlights? I'm not sure which is better for seeing blood.

The one I have is the non-LED one, it is about $40 at Cabelas. The LED is brighter, and lasts longer, but the bulb in the non-LED one throws a very pure light that I think makes the blood really stand out. Just be sure to buy extra batteries they are expensive, best to buy a 12 pack and it saves money.
