Hooked up with Greg K, and my buddy Glen to chase some late season phez. Got a late start due to family commitments. First spot I wanted to try had a couple deer hunters in it. No way we could access the area I wanted to hunt without messing them up, so we moved on. Hit a large piece of state game area with standing corn. Decided to head into the corn, rather than the edge cover that showed signs it was pounded by other hunters. First pass saw a lot of tracks, finally got a couple of points near the end of the field. First was a hen I nearly stepped on. Second was a rooster that launched as soon as my young Britt stopped to point, and I promptly missed an easy shot by getting my gun tangled in cornstalks.
Moved down a bit and headed back into the corn. This area was thicker, like the corn had been broadcast seeded rather than planted in rows. Lots of it was knocked over provided cover for the birds. Didn't get 30 yds and I hear something big coming toward me through the corn. Figured it was a dog, but got a heck of a suprise when a pair of antlers burst through the corn not 10 yds from me, headed right at me! Brought the gun up and yelled, and he passed close enough I could have touched him. Worked our way through the corn with 3 more birds pointed, and I managed to hit one of the roosters. Overall a really good trip. 7 birds, 3 roosters, one killed, 3 or 4 deer, and a small hawk. All on highly pressured state land.

Good for you, Todd! That is some excellent hunting as pheasants go in Michigan. Gotta love the dog work.
My brother is just getting back from a trip to NW Missouri for pheasant/quail, can't wait to hear how he did as well. I really miss quality bird hunting/small game around here but that is how it goes.

Sounds like you guys had lots of fun Todd. Be glad my uncle wasn't with you or your trip would have been cut short ( would have went to the hospital) both my couzins and I where scared when a small doe jumped up and headed for him in the regular season. We wanted to get out last weekend but with me being sick and then the wind when I woke up sunday morning we called it off only to have a nice afternoon, althou I did get some of the "honey do list" out of the way. We are hoping this weekend we will be able to get out. I know of a few small state land areas that don't get ponded that hard that we are going to try, hit them in the regular season a few times and they produced birds for us.

This got me to thinking about last time I ever hunted Pheasant in late winter. Was about 19 at the time. Me and a buddy saw a rooster go into a snow bank. So we got mischevious and tried, and actually did, catch it with our hands. Poor thing was having a hard time. So we took him in our car, perched him on the seat, and drove through McDonalds with him. He didn't like french fries. But we at least warmed him up. Took hime back to the woods and let him loose.

That's a great story, Paul.
Does any of our land offer much opportunity for pheasant? |

I know the 116 property is fair to great for pheasants, and Todd says there are a few propertys down in hillsdale that are good.

The Hillsdale property has been pretty hit or miss (closer to miss) this year. Very little cover, so what birds are there don't give you much of a chance. Our best property down there was mowed this year, so it has been pretty unproductive.
I was back out with Greg again this weekend. We flushed 4 hens, and no roosters. Wish I'd had more time to hunt than a couple hours, because I'm sure we had some roosters that gave us the slip while the dogs were busy with the hens that were holding tight. Maybe this weekend.
