Wanted to prune out the wild apple trees in units E and D this winter but the weather was terrible. Will get to it the next couple months. I will let you know when, if anyone can help. Just finished some logging in unit E. The squirrels will hate me but the rabbits and deer will love it. I talked one day with one of the loggers and all he said was "you have a lot of deer here". Maybe we could take more does next year. I might get a license and put one in the freezer myself. I was disappointed in last years food plots I think the seed was to old. I have been giving it some thought and believe the best thing would be a large number of tall mix food plots. This would not only provide winter food but winter cover as well. This would be most helpful to the pheasants. This would address the biggest problem for the pheasants, winter cover. I will provide labor equipment and fuel. Can you hunters put a few dollars together for new seed. $100 worth of seed would make a big change. This should benefit all wildlife but especially the pheasants. Is there going to be a wild game feed this winter??? Have a great spring , Dan |

The seed went into 5 different plots. Started out with good germination and then rain, rain, rain. had a lot of weed competition so I am disappointed with the results. If we do it again next year I will plant using the round-up method. Stop by and I will show you where they are. I was worried about the pheasant nesting this spring with all the rain. But I recently saw a hen with 12 chicks by the road. of course they will disappear come hunting season. This reminds me. I have trapped 3 cats of the property in the last 2 months. If anyone sees one please make it disappear. This is the greenest summer I can remember with all the rain. The farmers are not happy, wheat heads to wet, soy beans in low areas not good, corn late. One good thing is the wild apple trees have apples this year. There is also a lot of growth is some parts of the woods. |

The seed has arrived. The west side trail to the woods is torn up from the logging equipment. So I will reseed that as well with a perennial food plot mix. Total seed cost $119. Thanks for the help. The woods belong to the treefrogs right now. |

With the help of AJ, Mike, Dan, and Greg, we freed up the trees in question. Hopefully it will pay off. Had a great day for it, and lots of help, made it go pretty quick. Had more to do than I anticipated, since we actually cut out some of the competing trees. Made lots of nice brush piles for Willy and his bunnies, too.

We dodged a rain bullet yesterday. I went out to the woods yesterday. The access roads are very wet in a few spots but I can transport us in my mule. I have not seen many turkeys or pheasants this winter. When I drove around unit D I found the turkeys. Must have been 25-30 just inside the woods. Just talked to my neighbor Marty, he has lived here all his life. He remembers the glory days when there was a pheasant behind every blade of grass. He told me he counted as many as 12 roosters at a time all in the corn stubble nextdoor. The new winter standing food plots should keep them on the property. Saturday is looking like a real nice day. |

Lets try saving the wild apple trees this Saturday, the 21st. We will mostly be removing brush-trees that are blocking the sun. Wear boots for mud. Meet at my house at 10 am. There are actually 3 locations if we have the time and help. Call me Friday to confirm incase of bad weather, etc.. Things are a little wet. my cell 810-304-3941. I spoke recently with my neighbor who is our area QDM leader. He said that all the surrounding land and more is now signed up in QDM. It will be very interesting to see the impact in the years to come. He also mentioned that the area farmers are starting to scream about increasing crop damage from deer and turkeys. The deer herd here does not need anymore help except to thin down the does. I am going to work on upland bird habitat moving forward. I noticed recently that some of the switchgrass is starting to establish,finally. Thank you for the seed money, if there is any money left over I will buy fertilizer. You can mail it to me at 11148 Jeddo road, Yale Mi. 48097.. or just drop it off next time you are in the area. Pray for good dry weather this Saturday. |

Dan I will help prune the trees. I might bring my boys too, they can move the branches out of the way(they are only 11 and 13). Some fresh air and hard work will be good for them after along winter inside. Post when you are going to start it. I am free most weekends. Thanks Mike |

I for one need nothing else from the club. We have productive property, maps sufficient to find our ways around the property, multiple species to hunt, yes some more than others, and properties that are generally close enough to find your way there at not to much cost. Find a buddy in the club who lives near you and cut transport costs even more. I am willing to assist fund habitat improvements because I do have a bit of money and it is the right thing to do. Meeting land owners like Dan also adds something to the value. I hope a few others in the club can help fund the improvements on Dan's property. If not, we will survive. Thanks Dan for the offer.
