My son has a Rem 870 rifled barrel in 20g with a cantilever scope mount and a Bushnell 3 x9 scope on it with steel Weaver rings. I have a Prohunter 50 that shoots great, so I can shoot,lol. Im trying to help him sight in his gun at the range off a bench and a caldwell lead sled and we BOTH have gotten mixed results with both Remington buckhammers and Horandy sst. We will have two shots next to each other then one 4 inches over,then next low a couple and this is all at 50 yrds. This gun should be grouping at least 2-3 inches at worst at fifty yards. Then the guy at the range started telling me about cantilever mounts and that he thinks they move. Has anyone heard that or agree? Then a guy told me Hornady sst are junk try lightfields.Has anyone heard anything on that? Meanwhile the Youth hunt is getting closer and Im going broke on ammo,lol.This is his first year and I want as many odds in his favor before you throw in buck fever, cold,not a solid rest,etc into the equation.After those he will be lucky to hit the deer at all. Is this all I should expect for accuracy? Also Im new to the club but I thought I would throw it out there, are we allowed to sight in on a parcel we have reserved? It probably in the rules but I havent had a chance to look. |

The pain in the butt though is cleaning the ML. You use it for shotgun season and load it up everytime then if don't fire it have to go through the process of unloading it, or firing it off, then cleaning it. Be nice to just take the shells out of it and put it away. Been looking into some of these special slug guns. With the new sabots there claiming 2000 fps and dead on out to 160 yds. Humm ,, wonder if all thats true. Of course they are not cheap.

I couldn't agree more. The only place I ever use my shotgun is for close range stalking where I may need a second shot. Like sneaking through the cedar swamp at my folks' place mid-season. The newer sabot slugs with rifled barrels have improved things greatly, but you get much better ballistics out of an ML.

Another question for you guys. Are you suggesting that the 20ga. is better than a 12ga. for slug? Reason I ask is I've been thinking about getting into a slug gun instead of using my muzzleloader for everything. Assumed the 12ga. would be way to go. My neighbor is offering me his older Remington 870 pump with red dot scope and short slug barrel for $175. Also has a full choke I could use for Turkey. Seems like a good deal.
Also, my son has a 20 ga. 870 pump and been thinking about getting him a rifled barrel for it. Sounds like if I did it would be a pretty good little gun.

Yea the lightfields seem to be getting all the best reviews. When I was young I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with a shotgun. Then I took a lesson once on shooting clay pigeons. Guy taught me how to hold the shotgun, aim, and "slap" the trigger. Finally started hitting stuff. I was always taught to slowly squeeze the trigger on a gun. When I did that with shotgun couldn't hit squat. That article in Deer and Deer Hunting suggests alot of people make the same mistake with slug gun (ie, treat it like a rifle). This article says you hold it tight, smack trigger, and whammo. Accuracy will improve alot. I don't shoot one enough to know but thought it made sense. I use my muzzleloader for everything gun related right now.

John, I believe there is no better slug out of a 20ga. than the lightfields. My son shot 5 deer with his 20 useing lightfields. If I was going to go out and buy a new "slug gun" I would go with a Rem. 11-87 in a 20ga. and the first slug I would run throu it would be the lightfields, only if I couldn't get them to sight in would I try some other type of slugs.

There's a really good article in the "Deer and Deer Hunting" magazine called "keys to slug gun accuracy". They talk about how great todays technology is then stress that 99% of folks inaccuracy problems are due to how the slug gun is held and shot. Seems to be a trick to the method of holding and firing these bad boys. Many people simply fall into the bad habits that they talk about and get the inaccuracy.

In regards to your lack of accuracy, are you using rifled slugs by chance? I had a friend who tried using rifled slugs in a rifled barrel and it won't work. Just wondering. |

If the cantilever is one that is part of the barrel, shouldn't have any problem with it moving. Most likely that gun just does not like those loads. Shotguns can be very finicky. Try some different varieties, even different weight and speeds until you find a good one. Takes some cash to start with, but should be good to go as long as he owns the gun.
EDIT:
On the topic of target shooting, our leases are written for hunting access, not target shooting, so my vote would be no. A range would be much safer and better suited for that type of situation. If you want to try an evening of shooting, I have open access to Washtenaw Sportsman's Club in Ypsilanti. As long as there isn't a league event going on, we could shoot. Just give me a call, my boy and I could always use the practice, ourselves.

John,
The lightfield slugs in the 20ga. is compairable to a 454 casual(sp?) they group real good or did out of my sons 870 20ga. Sight them in at 2" high at 100 yards and you will be 4" low at 200 yards, If I remember correctly. That was 4 years ago when I did the studying on that gun and slug combo. I remember aim for the middle of the deer from 0 to 200 yards and you should have a dead deer. I was very impressed with the slugs though they held up real well even at them ranges.
I don't believe anyone has ever put this qustion out like this? but to the best of my knoladge we are not allowed to sight in on a reserved unit.

Actually I just skimmed through the rules and didnt see anything prohibiting shooting/sighting in on a parcel you have reserved. Did I miss it or is it allowed? |
